Parametricism is the architecture "of neoliberalism itself"

Parametricism, a style of architecture introduced by Patrik Schumacher, is positioned as a defining architectural movement of the 21st century. It diverges from traditional architectural styles by relying on algorithmic design, where buildings are shaped by a set of input parameters rather than direct human intervention. This approach allows for dynamic responses to various factors such as materials, site conditions, and environmental influences, marking a significant shift in architectural design. The roots of parametricism can be traced back to deconstructivism and earlier architectural experiments, but it gained prominence through the work of Zaha Hadid Architects, particularly in the early 2000s. Notable projects like the MAXXI museum in Rome and the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku exemplify the fluid forms characteristic of parametric design. Schumacher's vision for parametricism was formally introduced at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, where he proclaimed it the "great new style after modernism," coinciding with a period of economic turmoil. Critics argue that parametricism reflects the values of neoliberalism, as it often serves clients with significant financial resources while widening socio-economic gaps. Douglas Spencer's book, "The Architecture of Neoliberalism," suggests that parametricism is not only disconnected from the labor conditions that produce it but also perpetuates inequality. Despite its ambitious goals, parametricism has not achieved the widespread acceptance Schumacher envisioned, leading to the announcement of "Parametricism 2.0," which aligns the style with libertarian ideologies and Silicon Valley's technological solutions. The complexity of parametric designs can lead to challenges in execution, with some projects appearing unresolved when viewed up close. This paradox highlights the tension between the fluidity of parametric modeling and the static nature of constructed buildings. While parametricism is well-suited for infrastructure and corporate environments that require predictability, its association with morally questionable clients and its inherent complexities raise questions about its broader implications in contemporary architecture.
